Situated on the western part of Rajasthan, Barmer District is bounded by Jaisalmer in the north, Jalore in the south, Pali and Jodhpur in the east and Pakistan in the west. It has a total area of 28,387 sq km. Rajasthani and Hindi are the main languages spoken.
Barmer has harsh climate and tough terrain. The normal annual rainfall is 27 cm. Wheat, bajra, rapeseed and mustard, pulses, sesamum, barley, gram and red chilies are the major crops. Barmer is known for rich crafts, dances, music, pottery, carpets, intricate embroidery work, block printed fabrics, and multi- hued traditional costumes.
Barmer is connected by road with Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Pali, Jalore, Jaipur,
Ajmer, and Ahmedabad. The nearest airport is at Jodhpur. The important places to visit are Jasol, Juna Barmer, Juna Temple, Khed, Kiradu, Mahaveer Park, Meva Nagar, Neemari, and Safed Akhara. Mallinath Fair, Tilwara Cattle Fair, Nakoda Parasvanath festival, Veeratara Mela, and Khed Fair are some of the fairs and festivals celebrated in Barmer District.
