This town has a great historical background. It was the military headquarters of the
Zamorins of Kozhikode since ancient times. It was also the headquarters of European and British troops, and later on became the headquarters of Malabar Special Police. The place was also associated with Tipu Sultan. The Haig Barracks on the top of a hill, at the banks of the Kadalundi River, which was established by the British to station their forces, is now turned into the seat of district administration.
