Halasana reduces backache, calms the brain, stimulates the abdominal organs and the thyroid gland, stretches the shoulders and spine, and helps relieve the symptoms of menopause. It also reduces stress and fatigue.

Preparatory poses include Salamba Sarvangasana and Setu Bandha Sarvangasana. Adho Mukha Svanasana and Paschimottanasana are the subsequent poses. Halasana means 'plow pose.'
