Gulf of Mannar

Gulf of Mannar is a chain of 20 islands located on the south-west coast of India. The region extends from Tuticorin to Rameshwaram Island to a length of about 140 km. This area falls in the Indo-Pacific region, considered the world's richest in marine biological resources. These areas are blessed with a combination of ecosystems including mangroves, seagrass, seaweeds and coral reefs. Green turtle, sea cow and Olive Ridley turtle are also found in this area.

Gulf of Mannar, being a delicate region, was declared as a Marine National Park in 1986 and a Biosphere Reserve in 1989 by the Government of India.

The region is famous for its production of Indian conch.
