New Jerusalem Church was built in 1718 by Rev Barthalomew Ziegenbalg at Tranquebar, 35 km north of Nagapattinam and 50 km from Chidambaram. This small church is mainly for converted Indians. There is a small cemetery associated with the church, with some tombstones erected in the early eighteenth century.
