Mayiladuthurai, also known as Mayuram, is located 281 km south of Chennai. The river Cauvery passes through the town. According to myth, Goddess Parvati took birth as a peacock (mayil or mayur) due to a curse. She worshipped Mayuranathar - Lord Shiva – for absolution in this place.

Mayiladuthurai houses many temples including the famous Siva temple ‘Mayuranathar’, which belongs to the Chola period. The famous tourist spot Poompuhar is easily accessed from here. The other places of interest nearby are Tranquebar, Nagoore, Velankanni, Suriyanar temple, Vaitheeswaran kovil, Thirunageswaram, Thiruvenkadu, Keelaperumpallam, Thiruvidaimaruthur, Thinkalur, Thirunallar.

Mayiladuthurai Junction Railway Station is a major railway station on the meter gauge rail of the Southern Railway and is well-connected to major cities in the state. The place is well linked to nearby towns through the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses.
