Adyar

Adyar, also spelt Adayar, is a large residential area in south Chennai, on the southern banks of Adyar River. The place is bounded by the Buckingham Canal to the west, Besant Nagar to the east and Thiruvanmiyur to the south. Since the late 1990s, Adyar has become a part of the ‘IT corridor’ - the name given to the part of south-east Chennai where several IT companies have set up base.

Adyar is famous for being home to one of the top technical institutes in India - the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. Another point of attraction is the Theosophical Society. A huge banyan tree, around 450-year-old situated in the Theosophical Society campus attracts large number of tourists. The Elliot's Beach, located in Besant Nagar, is a popular recreation spot situated nearby.

Chennai International Airport serves Adyar. Chennai Central Railway Station is the nearest major railhead.
