Red Panda



Listed under the endangered species, Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens), also called Cat Bear, is seen in the temperate forests of the Himalayas above 1525 m. It has a bear-like body with thick russet fur, large erect pointed ears, stumpy muscle and short hairy-soled legs. The belly and limbs are black and there are white markings on the side of the head and above the small eyes. The length (head-body) is about 60 cm and tail is 40 cm. The animal weighs about three to four kg.

They are secretive and gentle creatures, spending most of the day sleeping. Life span is around 12 to 14 years. It feeds on bamboo, but also eats acorns, roots, berries, lichens and rarely eggs and young birds. After a gestation period of 110 to 160 days, the females give birth to one to four young ones,.

It can be spotted in the Mouling National Park, Arunachal Pradesh.
