Alappuzha District

Venice of the East

With the Arabian Sea on the west and a vast network of lakes, lagoons and fresh water rivers crisscrossing it, Alappuzha is a district of immense natural beauty. It is bounded on the north-east by Ernakulam District and Kottayam District, on the east by Pathanamthitta District and on the south-east by Kollam District.

The climate is moist and hot along the coast, slightly cooler and drier in the interior. The average monthly temperature is approximately 18° C. The important rivers are the Manimala, Pampa and Achankovil. The majority of population comprises agricultural laborers and coir workers. Coconut is grown in this area. The district also has important fisheries.

Alappuzha District is the center of snake boat races. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race at Punnamada Kayal, the Payippad boat race at Payippad near Harippad, the Thiruvanvandoor boat race, Neerettupuram boat race, Karuvatta boat race and Thaikkoottam boat race are all held on or around the Onam holidays.
