Payippad Boat Race

Payippad Jelotsavam

Payippad Boat Race, also known as Payippad Jelotsavam, is one of the major aquatic festivals celebrated on the rolling backwaters of Kerala. It takes place at Payippad in Alappuzha District.

This event is a major attraction during the festive season of Onam. It is celebrated in memory for the Prathista ceremony of Harippad Subramanya Temple. This three-day festival combines water floats, classical and folk art performances.

On the first two days of this festival, snake boat processions are organized. The last day of this festival is marked by boat racing. The neck-and-neck racing of the boats is a spectacular and a rare sight for the tourist.

Payippad is about 35 km from Alappuzha. Harippad Railway Station is about 5 km away.
