A taluk headquarters town, Sonahatu is in the eastern region of Ranchi District in Jharkhand. It is surrounded by Banta Hajam and Bhusudih towns of West Bengal in the east and Tamar in the south. Ranchi, the nearest major city, is about 50 km to the north-west.
The Sun Temple is the main attraction nearby. About 22 km away is the charming Jonha Waterfalls, which is on the Rarhu River.
Silli Railway Station is the nearest railhead and Ranchi Airport is the closest airport.
