Silchar, the headquarters of Cachar District in Assam, lies on the banks of the Barak River. Silchar is 240 km south-east of Shillong.
It is considered as the second largest city in the North-East. From here, one can have spectacular views of the surrounding ranges and valleys. Silchar is the center for high education in north-eastern region and is also a commercial center of the state.

Silchar Airport is about 24 km from city center. Silchar Railway Station is a prominent railway station in north-eastern India. National Highway 53 and National Highway 54 pass through Silchar. Guwahati is around 515 km north of Silchar.
