Sikandra, a magnificent tomb of the third Mughal Emperor Akbar
, is located 8 km north of Agra
in Uttar Pradesh
. It is believed to have been built between AD 1603 and AD 1613.
The tomb has an ideal combination of Hindu, Christian, Islamic, Buddhist and Jain designs. This combination is similar to a new religion called Deen-e-Ilahi, started by Akbar.
Sikandra is made of red sandstone in inlaid with white marble. It consists of three floors and four slender minarets in a perfect geometrical proportion. There is an open patio on the top.
The tomb can be visited from 06:30 to 17:30 hrs on a small entrance fee except on Friday, when it is free.
