Shri Mahavirji Temple



Shri Mahavirji Temple is a Jain temple devoted to the 24th Jain Tirthankar. It is located about 90 km by rail from Sawai Madhopur, on the New Delhi-Mumbai broad gauge route. The temple is inside an enclosure known as Katala.

Legend has it that a few hundred years back; a statue of Shri Mahavirji was unearthed by a cowherd. The place is a major Jain pilgrim center and attracts Jains from far and near. The temple raised on a huge platform is built mostly of white sandstone and combines modern and ancient style of architecture. The main Chattries (cenotaphs) are made of red sandstone and they can be seen from a distance. The walls are decorated with the carvings of religious scenes. In front of the temple, there is a tower (Man Stambh) which accompanies a Chattri, devotees pay special offerings to Mahavirji here.

Sawai Madhopur is well connected to Jaipur and other major tourist centers by road and rail. The nearest airport is at Jaipur(165 km).
