Satyavati was the great-grandmother of the
Pandava and Kaurava princes. She married the Rishi Parasara and their son was Sage Vyasa. Later on, she remarried King Santanu of Hastinapura on a condition that their children would inherit the throne. Their children were
Chitrangada and
Vichitravirya.
After the death of the king, Satyavati, with her two sons, ruled the kingdom. Satyavati is said to have granted Bhishma two boons, that he would never be defeated in battle and that he would only die when he himself wishes it.
