Rang Mahal

The Painted Palace

Rang Mahal, known as the Painted Palace, is one of the largest monuments and main attractions of Chamba. Located in Surara Mohalla, the foundation of this palace was laid by Raja Umed Singh, and later extended in 1860 by Raj Sri Singh. The architecture of the building is a mixture of Mughal and British styles. Earlier the residence of the ruling family, Rang Mahal is now maintained by the Handicrafts Department of the Himachal Pradesh Government and most of the rooms act as workshops. Some of the decorative and colorful wall paintings have been taken to the National Museum of Delhi and some other paintings and doors to the Bhuri Singh Museum of Chamba.
