Located 55 km southwest of Cuddalore, Neyveli is famed for the Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited - the biggest open-cast mechanized lignite mines in India. Neyveli has an area of 54 sq km and the employees of Neyveli Lignite Corporation constitute a major chunk of the population.

The nearby places of interest are Pondicherry, Chidambaram and Pichavaram.

The nearest airport is at Chennai, 200 km away. The railway station is located at Mandarakuppam, 12 km away from Neyveli and is connected to Cuddalore and Thiruppapliyur.
