Moira

Set in the heart of Bardez in North Goa District, Moira is a comfortable hamlet. The name implies Mauryan settlement as evidenced by inscriptions of the 6th-7th centuries, and the village has some magnificent buildings with historical importance. The culture, heritage and a native wisdom of Moira give it added tourist appeal.

Prior to the Portuguese settlement and mass baptism of the Moidekars, Moira was a Brahminical village with seven significant temples. The Portuguese are said to have destroyed these and established churches and chapels instead, which modern Moira is famous for. The Immaculate Conception Church, the Moira Club, also known as Associacao Academica de Moira, and the chapel of St. Sebastian are a few of these. St. Francis Xavier High School is a historic school.
