Kizhanilai village is 33 km from Pudukkottai in Pudukkottai District, Tamil Nadu, accessible through Thirumayam and Kanadukathaan. Literally Kizhanilai means 'the eastern gate', that separates from the neighboring village, Melanilai meaning 'the western gate'. There is a dilapidated fort spanning an area of about 43 acres. It was an important military station during the reign of Cholas and the Pandyas up to the 19th century.
