Karur, the administrative headquarters of Karur District, is situated around 50 km west of Tiruchirapalli.

The place is associated with the Hindu myth of creation and is referred to as the ‘place of the sacred cow’. It also finds a mention in the Kanda Puranam. Karur was ruled by the Cholas, the Naickers and the British successively. It is the headquarters of Karur District. River Amaravathy flows through Karur.

The Chettinad Cement Factory is located at Karur. Weaving is a major industry here. The Pasupatheeswarar temple is a nearby attraction.

Nearest airport is Tiruchirapalli Airport. Karur Junction Railway Station is on the Tiruchirapali-Erode rail route. National Highway 67 and National Highway 7 forms a junction at Karur.
