Karimala

Karimala is one of the dangerous hills of Sabarimala. The very name ‘Karimala’ suggests that it is the abode of elephants which visit the Karimala canal to drink water. Considered a hard place to walk, pilgrims continuously chant prayers when they climb up this hill. There are seven levels and on its top the terrain is flat and suitable for resting. The hill-top unfolds a picturesque scene of flora and fauna on either side of the hill. One of the attractions on the hill is 'Nazhikinar', a well with a fresh water spring. There are deities of Karimalanathan, Kochukaduthaswami and Karimala Bhagavati.

The pilgrims can reach Kottayam and Chengannur by rail and from there by bus to Pampa. Karimala can be reached on foot through the traditional and the most difficult route Erumeli.
