Kailasanathar Temple

Kailasanathar Temple is situated at Brahmadesam near Ambasamudram in Tirunelveli District. The main deities are Sri Kailasanatha Swamy (Lord Shiva) and Goddess Brahannayaki. The temple was constructed during the reign of King Raja Raja Chola and was later modified by Pandya Kings and Hoysala Kings.

Kailasanathar Temple has huge compound walls and the Rajagopuram in the front is 7 storied and the back gopuram is 5 storied. Five shivlingas are installed in separate sanctum sanctorum in the temple, namely, Sri Kailasanathar, Sri Badari Vaneswarar, Sri Viswanathar with Sri Visalakshi, Sri Arunachaleswarar with Unnamalai and Sri Sundareswarar with Sri Meenakshi. There is a Pradosha Sabhai with the deities of Pradosha Moorthy, Ashta Dikpalakas with their respective Vahanas, Shiva Boothaganas and Apsaras.

The shrine of goddess Brahannayaki is accompanied by the shrines of Chandikeswari, Goddess Saraswati and Uchchishta Ganapathy(Lord Ganesh). There are separate shrines for Vigneswara(Lord Ganesh), Lord Subrahmanya (Lord Muruga), Dharma Sastha (Lord Ayyappa), Balamurugan ((Lord Muruga), Lord Surya, Lord Chandra, Lord Dakshinamurthy and Thiru Navukkarasar, Thiru Gnanasambandar and Sundaramurthy Nayanar. The Nandi is of huge size, carved in a single stone. Arudra Mandapam and Somawara Mandapam are fine examples of excellent architecture.
