Jamdani

Jamdani is a patterned muslin cloth, which is embroidered during the weaving process. This cloth features the combination of the ancient weaving technique of West Bengal and the design patterns of Persia.

Jamdani was worn by both men and women in olden days. Today, this cloth is fashioned exclusively for women. This cloth is mostly worn as saris. It is also made into scarves, cushions and clothes meant for furnishing homes.

Jamdani contain geometric and floral patterns. It was originally woven in white colors containing designs made in bleached white. Nowadays, the Jamdani is dyed in a light shade and designs are made on it using white, maroon, black, green, gold or silver color. In some clothes, a special variety of silk called ‘muga,’ which is of dark golden color, is used for creating the patterns.
