Gambhira

A Mask Dance of Bengal

The mask dance known as Gambhira is found only in the Malda District of West Bengal. The characters represent puranic deities such as Shiva, Parvati and Kali. Gambhira is ceremonially performed on the occasion of the popular annual Sun festival which falls on April 13. The masks are made of special wood and are considered sacred.
