Chilika Lake stretches across the three districts of Puri, Khordha and Ganjam in Orissa. It is Asia's largest brackish water lake. A narrow isthmus separates Chilika from the waters of the Bay of Bengal.
Spread across an area of 1,100 sq km, it was declared a sanctuary in 1987. The lake is dotted with many emerald green islands and is a winter resort for migratory birds. Chilika Lake's Nalbana Island is a sanctuary well known for its varied flora and fauna, while Makar mela is celebrated in the Kalijal Island. Chilika Lake’s color changes with passing clouds overhead and the shifting sun. Sunset and sunrise are memorable experiences here.
Boating and fishing facilities are available in this lake. It is rich in mackerel, prawn and crabs and provides a livelihood to thousands of fishermen. Dolphins are seen at the Chilika mouth near Satapara (alternatively spelt Satapada). Water sports are organized at the water sports complex at Barakul.
The lagoon is well connected by rail and road and is just 100 km away from the Biju Patnaik International Airport.
