Chettikulangara Bharani, the annual festival of Chettikulangara Sree Bhagavathi Temple, is held on the Bharani asterism in February/March. The temple is located at Chettikulangara, about 5 km east of Kayamkulam in Alappuzha District. Kuthiyottam and Kettukazcha are the main rituals of this festival. A peculiar section of the Kuthiyottam is a procession of young boys, who have observed rigorous ritual penance. The procession of boys, who dance in a trance, is accompanied by the traditional drums, music and glittering ornamental parasols.
