Situated about 153 km from Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Barutrock is a small settlement in Kargil District. It is at an altitude of 9,025 ft above sea level and lies to the south-east of Kargil.
Kharbu in the west, Baru (1 km) in the north, Ando (1 km) in the east and Titichhung (1 km) in the south are nearby locations.
Barutrock can be easily approached from Pahalgam via Kunore.
