Baramulla, the administrative headquarters of Baramulla District

. It was a major religious center for the Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims in the past.
Baramulla was founded by Raja Bhimsina. Being considered as a gateway to the Kashmir Valley from Muzaffarabad, now in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, the town was a halting station for the Mughal rulers in the 16th century, while on a visit to Kashmir.
