The Assam University was constituted in 1989 as the result of the prolonged battle of the people of Barak Valley in Assam. This major university in north-east India is situated in the lap of a lush green hill-range in Silchar, where eleven youths had been martyred in 1961 when they agitated against the government, demanding a university. This growing center of higher learning has eight departments and three Centers, with five districts in its jurisdiction—Cachar, Hailakandi, Karimganj, North Cachar Hills and Karbi Anglong. The University offers several postgraduate courses and five-year degree courses. The library is well-equipped, with over 60,000 books.
