Agni Kundu

A Hot Spring

Agni Kundu is one among the hot springs in Bakreshwar in Birbhum District. As its name indicates, it is the hottest spring where temperature goes up to about 93 degree Celsius. It is located within a radius of 80 km from Shantiniketan.

Legend has it that in ancient times, there was a demon king named Hiranyakashipu, who had a deep hatred against Lord Vishnu. But his son Prahlad was a dedicated worshipper of that divinity. Therefore, he had to face many cruel punishments and miseries from his father. The lord at last interfered in favor of his ill-treated follower and killed the demon. But Prahlad, sorrowful for having been a part in the crime, went for pilgrimage. At last he reached here at Bakreshwar, bathed in this spring and obtained salvation.
