Hooghly River

The River of Sorrow


Popularly known as the River of Sorrow, Hooghly is a tributary of River Ganges. It flows through West Bengal and gives access to Kolkata from the 145841Bay of Bengal. The river is formed by the confluences of Bhagirathi and Jalangi rivers at Nabadwip, a Hindu pilgrimage center which is about 114 km north of Kolkata. From there, the Hooghly runs towards the south for about 160 miles to join the Bay of Bengal.
