Fishing Cat

Fishing Cat (Felis viverrina), a rare variety, is a small-to medium-sized cat with a tail shorter than its head and body length. Head-body length is around 70 to 86 cm and tail is around 25 to 33 cm. The cat stands 38 to 41 cm high at shoulders. It weighs approximately 7 to 15 kg.

The color of the coat varies from dark olivaceous-tawny with gray flanks to ashy-gray. The stripes on the neck and head, and the spots on the tail are black. The cat is very skillful at fishing and is powerful enough to kill sheep, calves, dogs and large snakes.

Fishing Cat can be spotted in the valleys of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers. It can be also seen in Ranipur Wildlife Sanctuary, Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, Gugamal National Park, Hadgarh Sanctuary and several other sanctuaries in India.
