Ten Kurangaaduturai Temple

Aabatsakayeswarar Temple


One of the two Kurangaaduturai Temples, Ten Kurangaaduturai is located in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. Situated at Aduthurai, the temple got its name after its location to the south of the Cauvery River. This highly revered Shivasthalam is believed to be place where Sugreeva had worshipped Lord Shiva.

Ten Kurangaaduturai Temple enshrines Aabatsakayeswarar as the presiding deity along with his consort Goddess Pavalakkodiyammai.

Ten Kurangaaduturai is built with two prakarams and boasts a large Rajagopuram. Most noteworthy feature of the temple is that Sun's rays illuminate the sanctum for three days in a year. The niche images are those of Vinayaka, Nataraja, Sage Agastya, Lord Dakshinamurthy, Lingodbhava, Lord Brahma, Alinganamurti (Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati) and Goddess Durga.

Legend has it that, Lord Hanuman and Sugreeva worshipped Lord Shiva here, and Shiva is said to have revealed a vision of his cosmic dance to Sugreeva. It is also believed that Lord Ram killed Bali at Ten Kurangaaduturai.

Navratri, Mahashivaratri and Arudra Darisanam are the major festivals celebrated in the Ten Kurangaaduturai Temple.

Aduturai Railway Station is the nearest railhead. Ten Kurangaaduturai Temple can be easily reached by bus from Kumbakonam.
