IndiaGuru Arjan
Guru Arjan is the fifth of the ten Gurus of Sikhism. He became the Guru on 1 September 1581. His era was marked by a rare liveliness, vitality and high spirit in the realm of Sikhism. He was an exceptional genius, completed the compilation of the Adi Granth which included the teachings of the five Gurus and sixteen Hindu saints. He initiated the Masand system by which every Sikh had to pay one tenth of his income to the Guru. He gave his blessings to Prince Khusru, the rebel son of Jahangir. But Jahangir could not tolerate the conversion of Muslims to Sikhism. Consequently, on the orders of Jahangir, Guru Arjan was tortured to death in 1605.
