Khordha District




The district of Khordha (earlier name, Khurda) was the capital of the erstwhile Orissa kingdom and is home to the traditional militia of Orissa, called 'Paiks.' Khordha has an area of 2,889 sq km and packs a population of about 1.8 million. Bhubaneswar, the capital of Orissa, comes within Khordha District. The climate is of extreme nature. Average annual rainfall is 166 cm.

The Daya and the Kuakhai are the main rivers. Khordha is famous for its cottage industries, spinning mill, watch repairing factory, cable factory, railway coach repairing factory, and oil industry. Basanti Puja, Mahashivratri, Makar Sankranti and Ram Navami are the major festivals celebrated. Atri, Banpur, Barunai Hill, Chilika (Barkul), Hirapur and Nandankanan Sanctuary are the major attractions.
