Savitri was born after eighteen years of continuous and dedicated prayers by her parents, King Ashwapati and Queen Malavi. When it was time for marriage, she chose a young prince named Satyavan who had lost his kingdom and was living with his parents in the forest. It was prophesied that the prince would live only a year thereafter. In spite of the prophesy, Savitri was determined to marry him. After marriage, she spent all her time serving her mother-in-law and father-in-law and praying for her beloved husband’s life. Days passed and the prince died eventually. Yama
, the god of death, was pleased with Savitri's devotion to her husband. He returned her husband’s life as well as his kingdom.
