Bomkai patterns are found in most sarees originating from Orissa. Barpali and Attabira towns in Baragarh District are the major centers for this design work.
Bomkai patterns are hand woven from gold or silver colored silk threads. They embellish the borders and pallu (falling edge) of a saree. These designs are sometimes combined with ikat (tie and dye) work. The patterns adhere to the traditional tribal motif of Orissa, which includes geometric designs, birds, elephants, peacocks and flowers.
