Balangir, the administrative headquarters of the Balangir District, is a historic town situated 327 km northwest of Bhubaneswar, in Orissa. It is one of the prominent commercial towns in the state.

Balangirís origin dates back to the 16th century and is believed to have founded by Balaram Deo. But no recorded history is available in this regard. The town was the capital of the feudatory state of Patna until the late 19th century.

Underneath its present day modern looks, the charm and serenity of its glorious past still lingers on. Excursions around the town include Patnagarh (38 km) and Saintala Village.

Balangir Railway Station is a major railhead on the South Eastern Railway. Closest airport is at Bhubaneswar.
