Sun Bear



Sun Bear (Helarctos malayanus) is small, strong and stocky bear, found in tropical and subtropical forests of India. The color of the coat varies from glossy black to dark brown. A curl of rosette is noticeable on each shoulder where hair (short and fine) originates in all directions. Sometimes feet and ears are pale brown. Muzzle is light brown, grayish or beige to white around the eyes. There is a white cream or dull orange breast mark present.

Head is short and broad with small rounded ears. The legs are large compared to body size. Claws are dark brown or gray, long, pointed and strongly arched.

The animal can be seen in the Mini Zoological Garden, Mizoram.
