Flying Fox

Flying Fox (Pteropus giganteus) is the largest Indian bat having dog-like face and eyes. It has reddish brown fur, leathery black wings, black nose, and long bristly tongue. Wingspan is about 4 feet. Neck, shoulders, chin and flanks are diverse color of brown.

It is found in forests rather than in caves. High above the rainforest camps of flying foxes hang upside-down together, sometimes in groups of as many as a million foxes. It uses bouncing sounds for locating food at night. The bat eats flowers and pollen, and fruits.

Male flying foxes get a female’s notice by singing loudly and flashing a collection of hair on their backs.

Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary and Sanjay Gandhi National Park are some among the numerous sanctuaries where flying fox can be spotted.
