Maddur is situated 20 km from Mandya, the district headquarters. Formerly known as Arjunapura, the town has historical importance. There are old temples built by Hoysalas and Chola dynasties. The Narasimha Swamy Temple of the Hoysalas has the figure of Ugra Narasimha, which is said to be the best of its kind in the state. The Varadaraja temple is an early Chola structure with a 12 ft tall Varadaraja figure. Madduramma is the village goddess of the place. The town is also well-known for its Maddur Vadai, a delicious fried snack made of a mixture of pulses.
