Hemakuta Hill, overlooking Hampi Bazaar, lies to the south of the Virupaksha temple. Legends say that Lord Shiva performed penance on this sacred hill before his marriage and he burnt Kama, the God of lust, in the same place. The hill has breathtaking rock formations and a group of pre-Vijayanagar temples built in 1309-1310. This fantastic place is ideal for rock climbing and offers excellent view of Hampi Bazaar. There is an imposing monolithic sculpture of Lord Narasimha and two images of Lord Ganesh placed on the slopes of the hill.
