Sonamarg

Meadow of Gold

Sonamarg literally means 'Meadow of Gold'. Sonamarg is surrounded by glaciers and calm lakes, flower-laden meadows, lofty snow-covered Himalayan peaks and a number of trekking and hiking trails.

Sonamarg is the last major point in the Kashmir valley before the Zoji La pass into Ladakh. This place is located at an altitude of 2,740 m above sea level. Sonamarg experiences mild summer from April to June and cold winter from November to February.

Sonamarg is the base of a major trek that passes along several mountain lakes such as Vishansar, Kishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and Gangabal. Many tourist spots grace this enchanting place. Nilagrad is in Sonmarg, and is a colony of the Baltics where a small stream meets the River Sindh. Among the many lakes on the bed of the Himalayas, Bisansar and Krishnasar Lakes are in Sonamarg.

Sonamarg is in Srinagar District on the -Leh Highway, 110 km from Srinagar. The nearest airport is Srinagar Airport. Bus service is available from Srinagar.
