Tabo Monastery is an ancient monastery, situated at Tabo Village, about 46 km south-east of Kaza
in Lahaul and Spiti District
, Himachal Pradesh
Built in 996, it is the largest monastic complex in
Spiti Valley. Also known as Tabo-Chos-Khor, which means 'doctrinal circle', it houses 9 temples, 23 chortens, a monks' chamber and an extension that houses the nuns' chamber. The monastery houses fine sculptures, stucco images and wall painting which are similar to the Ajanta-Ellora paintings in Maharashtra.
