Amir Khusro

Father of North Indian Classical Music


A gifted musician, philosopher, linguist, warrior and a nobleman in the court of Alauddin Khilji, Amir Khusro (1253-1325) is considered to be the Father of North Indian Classical Music. He is said to have created ragas such as Yaman, Todi, Hemant, Prabhat Kali, Hem Behag; musical instruments such as Sitar, Tabla; genres such as Khayal and Tarana. His tomb is next to that of his spiritual master, Hazrat Nizamuddin at South Delhi District's Nizamuddin colony. On every Vasant Panchami Day, a concert is organized at Amir Khusro's tomb where renowned musicians perform compositions penned by Khusro.
