Samastipur District of Bihar is spread over an area of 2,904 sq km and has a population of about 3 million. It is bounded by the Bagmati River separating it from Darbhanga District in the north, Vaishali and some parts of Muzaffarpur District in the west, the river Ganges in the south, and
Begusarai and some parts of Khagaria District in the east. The district headquarters is located at
Samastipur.
Hindi is the main language spoken.
Samastipur is the divisional headquarters of the North Eastern railway. It has direct train link with Patna,
Kolkata, Delhi, Dhanbad, and Jamshedpur.
The important rivers are the Burhi Gandak, Baya, Kosi, Kamla, Kareh, Jhamwari, and Balan. Agriculture is the principal economic activity and nearly 83 percent of the total working population depends on it. Wheat, pulses, tobacco and edible oil seeds are cultivated here. Processed tobacco and fruits including mango, litchi and bananas are exported. Samastipur District is ideal for the rearing of milch cattle. There are two sugar mills, a jute mill, a paper factory, and many small factories.
