Bash Puja

Bash puja is observed by the Hajongs of Assam. It is held during Baisakh, the first month of Assamese calendar.

Three newly cut bamboos are used to perform this puja, which lasts for three days. The bamboos are decorated with white and red cloths and are fixed on the ground and then worshipped. The two main bamboos represent Madan and Gopal, some consider it as Shiva and Parvati.

Religious dance is performed during the puja. During this dance, the priestess called Deodini dances with a bowl on her head containing the blood of a fowl. It is believed that during the dance Lord Bathou, a local deity, will seize the bowl and drink the blood.
