Indian Tree Shrew

The Indian Tree Shrew (Anathana ellioti) is a squirrel-like, medium-sized tree shrew with a long and well-furred tail. Earflaps are large, and also the lower lobe being larger than the upper one. The inner side of the ear is thicker haired than in Tupaia. Head-body length is around 160 to 185 mm. Its body weighs 160 gm.

The nose is small and heavy. The naked snout pad is more roughly reticulated than that of Tupaia. Tail is bushy, long, approximately equal to head and body length, covered with long hairs on the dorsal side and shorter hairs on the ventral side. The colorization of coat varies from brown or grey-brown above, speckled with black and sometimes tinged with reddish, to whitish or buff below. The hairs are rather short and stiff.

The animal can be spotted in the Sri Venkateswara National Park, Andhra Pradesh.
