Vihara

Vihara is a Buddhist monastery. It consists of a central hall surrounded by small cells in which the monks live. As far back as the time of Ashoka these cells were plain rooms. Later these were decorated with artistic columns and other pieces of sculpture. The residential cells are small and usually carved out of rock. Some of these cells contain a couch for a person to lie on and also small shelves carved out on the walls.
