Draksharamam

Also called Dakshina Kasi

Draksharama, is one of the important centers of Shiva worship in Andhra Pradesh. It is a much revered place near Kakinada. The place is also known as Daksha Vatika or Dakshatapovana. It is one of the Arama kshetras, situated in East Godavari District. The magnificent Bhimeswara Temple at Draksharama dates back to the 10th century. It was built by Bhima, the Eastern Chalukya King of Vengi, dedicated to Shiva with his consort Manikyamba.

The sculptures of mythological figures and carvings on the pillars of the temple reveal the architectural traditions of the Chalukya and Chola dynasties. The temple has four entrances and the main temple is twin-storeyed. The ten feet high Bhimeswara idol is placed in the sanctum sanctorum in the form of a Shivling. The architectural beauty and historical importance of the temple with its narrow mandapam (sanctum) are the highlights.

This place is also known as Dakshina Kasi. There are excellent connections to Draksharamam by road both from Rajahmundry and Kakinada.
